COVID-19 in Scotland

In Edinburgh, there are still some restrictions, but most things are open.

For example, you can…

  • … meet outdoors in groups without social distancing
  • … meet indoors (in houses) without social distancing
  • … meet indoors (in places like cafes and restaurants) without social distancing (wearing a face covering when not seated)
  • … visit places like museums, castles, and other tourist attractions (wearing a face covering if indoors)
  • … travel around Scotland and the UK (face coverings required on public transport in Scotland)
  • … go to gyms, swimming pools and shops

You should….

  • … wear a face-covering in places like shops and on public transport
  • … avoid crowded places
  • … self-isolate and get a COVID-19 test if you have any symptoms of the virus

Everyone in Scotland can get free regular tests for COVID-19. We recommend all our students take at least 2 tests a week. Find out more on our blog. We also recommend you download the Protect Scotland App.

You can find the latest information about COVID-19 in Scotland on the Scottish Government website and BBC News Scotland.

Measures in the School

Alba English is open for face-to-face classes. Things are a little different in the school.

  • You will have 1m distance between you and other people in your class
  • You will have to wear a face covering in common areas, but not when you are in the classroom
  • We have lots of hand sanitiser so you can regularly wash your hands
  • We clean the tables and chairs before every class

These measures may change, depending on government advice changing.

Coming to Scotland

Some people have to self-isolate for 10 days when they arrive in Scotland. It depends on where you are travelling from and if you've been vaccinated. Some countries are on a 'red list' and people coming from those countries have to follow much stricter rules.

Find out which countries are on the red list at this link. Note that the list is regularly reviews and countries can move between lists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I travel from an ‘non-Red list’ country?

If you travel from a non-Red list country and are not fully vaccinated, you’ll have to self-isolate for 10 days. If you book your accommodation with us, you'll need to stay in a hotel or AirBnB before moving into homestay after completing your self-isolation.

If you are fully vaccinated, then you don't need to self-isolate. Just take a test within two days of arriving in Scotland. Scotland accepts European Digital COVID certificates and proof of vaccination from other countries including Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and United Arab Emirates (UAE). Check the details at this link.

What happens if I have symptoms of COVID-19 while in Edinburgh?

If you develop symptoms, you must not leave your house except to get a test. Please book your test on the NHS Scotland website. If you need help knowing what to do or need support while self-isolating, contact us (by email or phone - don’t come to the school) and we will do our best to help!

What happens if I have to self-isolate during my course?

If you test positive for the virus, you will have to self-isolate for 7 to 10 days.

If you have been in contact with someone who tests positive for the virus, you will have you to self-isolate until you get a negative test result (if you have been fully vaccinated) or self-isolate for 10 days (if you have not been fully vaccinated).

If this happens, we have options for you:

  • Part-time students (taking 9 or fewer classes per week) can pause their course and take the classes at the end.
  • Full-time students (taking 10 or more classes per week) can choose to pause their course and take the classes at the end or have their two face-to-face classes in the morning replaced by a one-hour private online class.

Just email us and let us know about your situation and we'll be ready to help!
